Following initial proposals for increased service charges, Johannesburg Executive Mayor Dada Morero has announced the withdrawal of the hike and new proposals ensuring no change in service charges for prepaid electricity users.
The City of Johannesburg initially proposed an increase in service charges for prepaid electricity users. Johannesburg Executive Mayor Dada Morero has announced the withdrawal of the proposed increases, along with the City Power tariff, 2025/2026 budget, and Draft Property Rates report. In their place, new proposals have been put forward. The initial proposal included a service charge hike from R200 to R270 per month for high prepaid electricity users, effective July 2024.
This tax was implemented with low users exempt and high users facing a monthly charge. However, the new proposal will see Joburg prepaid electricity users continuing to pay the current amount of R200 per month, meaning no change in service charges. Mayor Morero urged residents to pay their municipal accounts, highlighting their importance in funding improved basic services. He also encouraged residents and businesses to be mindful of their water and electricity consumption. This announcement comes amidst ongoing discussions and public participation meetings regarding the 2025/2026 budget
