City Power says it is expanding its electricity network in Johannesburg’s Informal Settlements to safeguard human rights.
According to the power utility, despite limited resources, it has exceeded its target, electrifying over 2,000 households in informal settlements across Johannesburg. City Power CEO, Tshifularo Mashava, emphasized the importance of access to electricity, stating that it’s essential for social and economic development.
City Power Spokesperson, Isaac Mangena says City Power is exploring alternative energy sources, including microgrids, to meet the unique needs of underserved areas. “In the 2023/24 financial year, City Power successfully electrified several informal settlements, including Amarasta in Alexandra, Roodepoort, Slovo Park, Veggieland, Princess Plot, Matholesville, and Kliptown. A total of 2,675 households were connected-well above the initial target of 2,500, as reflected in the Auditor General’s report and our annual performance review report. We are continuing to make headway in electrifying more communities through conventional and alternative energy sources.
