The Palestinian Authority almost immediately cancelled its security co-ordination with Israel, in which both sides have worked together to some degree to prevent terrorist attacks. The militants in Gaza, however, were far less diplomatic. Needing little excuse to launch attacks on Israeli civilians, Palestinian Islamic Jihad sent several barrages of rockets across the Gazan border in the overnight hours. Israeli warplanes responded by bombing an underground rocket-manufacturing facility and a military base, prompting anti-aircraft fire from Hamas.
