Billed as a spiritual successor to 2015’s Carrie & Lowell, this new album features some of his soppiest love songs yetand the wonky psychedelic freakout. Fans tend to prefer the former, but it isn’t always clear Stevens shares their enthusiasm., the Michigan-born artist has released five volumes of ambient “mediative” music, duetted with gothic folkie Angelo De Augustine and put out a suite of piano compositions in conjunction with Houston Ballet.
The sweetness that is a regular feature of the singer’s work bubbles to the surface, too. “Everything That Rises” channels Limahl’s “The NeverEnding Story” into lyrics that compare love to religious ecstasy . But there is darkness along with the light. On the tenderly strummed title track, he wonders if love is worth the inevitable emotional turmoil .Stevens is protective of his privacy and the timelines of the love affairs chronicled here are unclear.
It’s impossible to say. Equally hard to assess is the impact of the autoimmune condition with which Stevens was recently diagnosed and which has affected his ability to walk . Yet, for all the mysteries swirling around the project, one fact is indisputable. As a songwriter, Stevens is firing on all pistons.
