The penalty kick that cost the Whitecaps the game in Real Salt Lake on Saturday is water under the bridge as they look forward to this week in Houston.
Marc Dos Santos is finished talking about the controversial call that went against his Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday, a penalty kick won by Real Salt Lake’s Corey Baird on a phantom foul by fullback Jake Nerwinski.
“But they didn’t need to call us; we’re not dwelling on it. We’re focused on what’s next. We’re not crybabies here. How Nerwinski found himself guarding two players and the ball shows the Caps are a team still working out the bugs. A decision by winger Lucas Venuto higher up the field led to an overload against Nerwinski a few passes later, forcing him to scramble to catch up to the overlapping player making a run on the through ball.
“The line is … that tackle in the first game. That’s where the line is,” he said of his errant crotch-kick that felled Francisco Calvo. Inbeom Hwong, who had five key passes in the game, launched two long-distance shots that tested the MLS all-time goalkeeping wins and save leader in Nick Rimando.
