It’s Jamaican Patty Day in Toronto. The annual holiday is a tribute to the decades-old ‘Patty Wars,’ a citywide feud between patty vendors and food inspectors in Toronto over the tasty pastry.
Nearly 40 years ago, a fight over beef boiled over between Toronto's Jamaican patty vendors and local city food inspectors. The annual holiday is a tribute to the legendary “Patty Wars,” which started in 1985 when Toronto food inspectors wanted local patty vendors to stop using the term “beef patties” to describe the pastry. Following a series of negotiations, the city’s patty vendors prevailed in a ruling on Feb. 23, consecrating the day as Jamaican Patty Day.
Jamaican patties — flaky savoury pastry shaped like a half-moon and typically filled with generously seasoned ground beef — can be found across the city. Variations to the filling can include chicken, pork, vegetables, and curries. Ever since, Jamaican patties have been a part of Toronto’s food fabric, featured in street food stands, subway stations, family-owned bakeries and Caribbean restaurants.
"There's no doubt Torontonians are incredibly passionate about Jamaica's iconic snack food, and everyone has an opinion about who makes the best beef patty in town," said Angella Bennett, Regional Director, Canada, Jamaica Tourist Board in an emailed statement, urging people to get out and pick up some Jamaican patties in support of the holiday.
