“There’s been some creative solutions. They have groups of 60 and 70-year-olds at some of the YMCAs now guarding swimming pools but it is not unlike the restaurant industry and the construction industry. People have left the profession and it is hard to replace them.” “That’s where we are right now,” said Gardiner. “We are having a course here and offering it for free and we are hoping to get some more kids registered, so we will have for the next ongoing years, we will have some lifeguards.”
The Northside Community Pool is currently experiencing a lifeguard shortage. If you’d like to become a lifeguard, they are offering free training on March 18. GREG MCNEIL/CAPE BRETON POST - Greg McNeilLocally, the Northside Pool is not the only swimming area suffering from a lifeguard shortage. Last summer, the Lions Club had to cancel their popular supervised swim at Kidston Island because they couldn’t find enough lifeguards to safely run the program.
Outdoor beaches under the guidance of the Lifesaving Society had enough lifeguards to monitor beaches last summer, but D’Eon said they had to get creative to fill all positions.
