CareerJunction's latest Employment Insights report reveals a 19% year-on-year decline in IT hiring for the fourth quarter of 2024, while still maintaining a high demand for skilled professionals. Jobseeker engagement for IT roles remains strong, suggesting a growing pool of talent seeking new opportunities. The report also highlights a shift in hiring priorities, with a move away from building new systems towards optimizing and integrating existing technologies. Remote work continues to be prominent in the IT sector, with a significant increase in remote job opportunities compared to 2019.

CareerJunction's latest Employment Insights report reveals a significant decline in hiring activity for IT professionals during the fourth quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. Year-on-year hiring activity in the IT sector contracted by 19%, marking a notable shift in the recruitment landscape. Despite this downturn, CareerJunction emphasizes that the demand for IT professionals remains robust.

The report, compiled from data gathered from approximately 5,000 leading South African recruiters, provides valuable insights into the supply and demand dynamics within the nation's online job market. The report highlights a stark contrast between the decline in hiring activity and the surge in jobseeker engagement. While quarter-on-quarter jobseeker engagement for IT roles dipped by 9%, year-on-year and over the past two years, engagement has witnessed substantial growth. This suggests that more IT professionals are actively exploring new career opportunities. The report also delves into hiring trends across various sectors during the last three months of 2024 compared to the preceding quarter. It indicates a 5% decline in hiring activity for IT professionals, encompassing reductions in hiring for software developers, systems and network administrators, business analysts, and data analysts. CareerJunction attributes this shift to a fundamental transformation in the tech hiring landscape over the past five years. The company observes that while software developers remain the most sought-after tech role, the demand for them, along with IT project managers, has noticeably diminished. This, CareerJunction contends, reflects a move away from developing new systems towards optimizing and integrating existing technologies. Conversely, there is a surge in recruitment for roles in systems and network administration, particularly those focused on cloud computing and security. Data-driven positions, such as data engineers, data scientists, and business intelligence analysts, are also experiencing increased recruitment rates. CareerJunction views this trend as a testament to the growing emphasis on infrastructure optimization and data utilization. The report also examines remote working trends in late 2024. It notes a general decline in vacancies offering remote or hybrid working arrangements between 2023 and 2024. However, IT professionals continue to be at the forefront of remote work. The distribution of remote working vacancies strongly favors the tech sector. According to CareerJunction's data, IT holds the majority of remote vacancies, followed by Business & Management, Sales, Finance, and Admin, Office, and Support roles. The report further reveals that remote job opportunities in the IT sector have expanded significantly between 2019 and 2024, increasing from around 2.5% of all vacancies to 11.5%. CareerJunction identifies the following skills as having the most remote work opportunities:
