The IDF claims it has targeted the head of Hezbollah in a series of huge airstrikes in Beirut. Hours earlier, Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to keep fighting the militant group in a UN speech - and also warned Iran: 'We can strike anywhere.' Submit a question for our Middle East team below.

According to the Israel Defence Forces, sirens have sounded in Safed, a city in the north, and surrounding areas.It's 8pm and if you're just joining us, there's been a major escalation in the Israel-Hezbollah conflict.

Israeli military radio claimed the attack targeted Iran-backed Hezbollah's leader Hassan Nasrallah - though initial reports from sources close to the militant group and Iran claim he survived;Iran's embassy in Lebanon said Israel's attack represents a"dangerous game-changing escalation" that will"bring its perpetrator an appropriate punishment";

The Israeli military radio later said the army was assessing whether the militant group's leader, Hassan Nasrallah, was in the headquarters at the time of the strike. Inspections are ongoing at the site of one of the Israeli airstrikes in southern Beirut today. The number of civilian deaths after a series of Israeli airstrikes in a densely populated part of southern Beirut this afternoon is expected to be high.

"I encourage the Lebanese who are watching us, if they have a weapon in the home, a rocket launcher, we are aware of the location of those facilities," he said. Asked if Israel gave any advanced notice to residents in the area of the attack, he said Hezbollah"will not find a place to hide". Within roughly an hour of his speech at the UN, multiple Israeli airstrikes were carried out in southern Beirut, said by the military to be targeted at the headquarters of Hezbollah.But the US, a key Israeli ally - which this week had public hopes for a ceasefire - was given no warning of the strike, a Pentagon spokesperson said.

Our team was in Dahieh yesterday - a Hezbollah stronghold in the south of the city where today's strike was believed to have been targeted - after a strike that killed a Hezbollah commander.
