An IPID report reveals a disturbing increase in crime among police officers, highlighting rape and corruption cases. The report sparks outrage and calls for swift action from authorities to address these issues.

An Independent Police Investigative Directorate ( IPID ) report has unveiled a concerning reality about crime within the police force. The 2023/2024 Annual Report by the police watchdog revealed a total of 110 rape incidents committed by police officers nationwide, a decrease from the 122 cases reported in the previous year. Despite this slight decrease, the statistics paint a grim picture of the criminal elements within the force.

The report highlights the provinces most affected by these incidents, with KwaZulu-Natal recording the highest number of cases at 26, followed by Gauteng with 20 documented cases. Gauteng saw six rape cases committed while on duty and 14 off-duty incidents. The Eastern Cape reported 18 cases, while the Western Cape recorded 19 and the Northern Cape had 14. Adding to the disturbing findings, the report also reveals that Gauteng, with 897 cases, has the highest number of overall rape cases reported, followed by the Western Cape with 888 cases. These alarming statistics come on the heels of recent events that have shocked South Africans. Video footage surfaced showing two female police officers from the Heidedal police station in the Free State assaulting a woman believed to be a domestic violence complainant. In another incident, a video captured police officers accepting bribes from an alleged car thief who went undercover to expose the corrupt officers. Reacting to these shocking revelations, Crezane Bosch, the DA's shadow MEC for police in Gauteng, expressed deep concern for the safety of residents in the province. She stated, “The safety of Gauteng residents is increasingly at risk, as a recent report reveals disturbingly high instances of 20 rapes and 37 corruption cases that implicate police officers themselves.” The report also sheds light on the prevalence of corruption within the police force. A total of 79 corruption cases were reported nationally, with Gauteng accounting for 47% of these cases at 37. Out of these cases, 33 involved SAPS members and four involved metro police officials. Bosch lamented that these figures paint a bleak picture for the people of Gauteng, who feel betrayed by those sworn to protect them.Crime activist Yusuf Abramjee echoed these concerns, stating that the levels of criminality within the SAPS are cause for serious concern. He called for increased efforts from the force's Human Resources departments and urged IPID to expedite its processes. Abramjee stressed the need for the Anti-Corruption Unit within the police to be adequately resourced and empowered to act swiftly against corrupt officers. In response to the Free State incident, Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu condemned the actions of the two female officers involved in the assault. He assured the public that IPID was actively investigating the matter and that an internal investigation was underway within the SAPS to hold those responsible accountable. Mchunu emphasized that the behavior displayed by these officers is unacceptable and contradicts the core values of the SAPS. While acknowledging the ongoing challenges related to gender-based violence (GBV), Minister Mchunu commended IPID's efforts in addressing this issue. He highlighted the progress made through the amendment of the IPID Act and praised the working team under the guidance of the Civilian Secretariat for the police service
