After working with Stefano Pilati and Shayne Oliver, Andreas Aresti is striking out on his own with Lourdes New York.
pulling up a passport photo of his mom circa 1988 on his iPhone. He’s not wrong. With her choppy, wavy bangs and wide-set brown eyes, she bears more than a passing resemblance to the Argentine model. For Aresti, his mother Lourdes—a first-generation immigrant from Peru who landed in New York around the same time the image was taken—represents a version of the American Dream that is rarely told in fashion.
It’s why the 26-year-old stylist turned designer has named his womenswear label, Lourdes New York, after his mom. Entitled “Niagara Falls,” the first collection was inspired by a trip she and his Greek-Cypriot father took early on in their courtship. Flickering holograms of the twisted tourist tees and statement denim jeans were on display later that night, when Aresti hosted a dinner to celebrate his new line at Dragons Elysées, a Chinese night spot that’s part aquarium, part eatery.The clothes themselves speak to Aresti’s childhood in Queens, New York in the mid-nineties and his memories of shopping trips in big box stores with his mother.
