When it comes to Nova Scotia’s rich shipbuilding and seafaring history, particularly Hantsport’s, “Joey” St. Clair Harvie Patterson was a walking encyclopedia. | SaltWire

Patterson died on Aug. 24 at 97 years old. Born on May 8, 1925, he is thought to be Hantsport’s last Second World War veteran who had seen active duty overseas. Working aboard the S.S. Gypsum Prince — a boat that carried gypsum to U.S. ports — for six months, then joining a three-man crew on a tug boat in the busy Halifax Harbour, helped prepare Patterson for service aboard a corvette convoy escort in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve. He served as an officer steward on the K113 in the Second World War between 1943 and 1945. Following the war, he held a variety of positions, largely as a carpenter and labourer.

Porter has known Patterson since the 1970s when they were involved with forming the historical society. At the time, Porter was a recreation director in town.
