The parameters for my generation, for what we will and won’t tolerate in the workplace might have changed but that doesn’t mean we have become soft We are simply less willing to be an emotional punching bag for a pay cheque 🖋️ ellieapeake

My friend was bullied at work for a year before she called it quits. She would go to work crying and she would return from work crying. Her boss would humiliate her almost daily. As the only person singled out, she had no camaraderie with her colleagues. Her parents told her to stick the job out; some managers are just bad. Eventually though, she gave in. With no job lined up, she handed in her notice, a shell of the person I knew her as.

Previously people might have seen this same effect but have been afraid to call it out – or not known how to even speak about it – but now we know that things can be different and we don’t have to put up with it, because that’s “the way it is”. Being bullied stays with you. You might grow from it and become kinder or more empathetic – my friend says “you end upand mentally unwell and I don’t ever want to be responsible for doing that to someone” – or you might become callous, throwing stones at everyone below you. You might become another bad boss.

The parameters for my generation, for what we will and won’t tolerate in the workplace might have changed but that doesn’t mean we have become soft. We are simply more confident than our parents in our value, and are less willing to be an emotional punching bag for a pay cheque. Our therapy speak might seem cloying or trivial, but it is a useful tool for knowing your worth.
