Supermarkets may have veg shortages but local greengrocers have plenty on hand
Restrictions on the amount of certain fruit and veg you can buy in some UK supermarkets hit the headlines this week, as the likes of Tesco, Aldi and Morrisons face shortages. Only five supermarket chains across the country have been unaffected by the shortages that are expected to last until May or even June.
Harsh weather in the UK, with the heatwaves last summer and freezing snap in December, have also affected the amount of fruit and veg grown here. Some industry experts have also blamed Brexit and the border checks throwing off some producers from selling to the UK. Setting off into Northampton Town Centre, it was only natural I start at the market in its new home on Commercial Street. Between the two remaining fruit and veg stalls there, there were plenty of tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers with no restrictions whatsoever.
But just a few hundred feet up the street there were tables groaning with fruit and veg at Fresh Market, opposite H&M. I saw mountains of tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers inside the store, all priced at around £1.50.
