Millions have fled their homes in the conflict
A Northampton man helped to fit a Ukrainian girl with a "priceless" insulin pump that would change her life. Refugee Dasha Makarenko was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2020 and needed at least four injections of insulin per day and constant care from her parents.
After the original fundraising goal of £5,000 was met in just seven days, Mr Rice was approached by medical technology company Medtronic who offered Dasha the life-changing treatment. The company managed to provide her with an automatic insulin pump – removing the need for manual injections and allowing her to lead “a near normal life”.
Hundreds of millions have been donated to Ukraine fundraisers on GoFundMe in one of the greatest “outpourings of generosity” ever seen on the platform. The fundraising site confirmed to the PA news agency that more than £225,000,000 was contributed from countries around the world since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 2022, forcing millions to flee their homes.
