Eddie Pezindewatch Côté says the Pope\u0027s apology for the church\u0027s role in the residential school system didn\u0027t come from the heart.
“It is necessary to remember how the policies of assimilation and enfranchisement, which also included the residential school system, were devastating for the people of these lands,” the Pope said, adding that he was “deeply sorry” for how “many Christians supported the colonizing mentality of the powers that oppressed the Indigenous Peoples.”
“There were maybe 21 of us, and we got on the train. It was three days and two nights to Kenora, to St. Mary’s, with nowhere to sleep but in our seats. “When I went to residential school, my parents told me, ‘You’re going to be a teacher. You’re going to be a lawyer. You’re going to come back well-educated.’ They believed that, but it didn’t work out that way.
