Aside from helping to work out the movement in a scene, the intimacy co-ordinator also acts as an actor’s advocate and liaison between production and talent. A big part of the job is making sure the actors feel safe while doing their jobs.

Intimacy co-ordinator Amanda Cutting says having an IC on set helps a performer relax and do their job.The relatively new role of intimacy co-ordinator was developed out of a need in the industry that was highlighted in 2017 by the huge groundswell in the #MeToo movement, a movement started by Tarana Burke in 2006.

Obviously, every actor is different and has different concerns and comfort levels. Some, Hudecki said, are confident and experienced and have agency in the creation of the action. Others appreciate specific movement coaching, mental preparation and closure.

Stacy Rukeyser, the showrunner/creator/executive producer/writer of the series Sex/Life, is a big fan of having an intimacy co-ordinator on set.Right now, most intimacy co-ordinators are women and non-binary people, but there is a push to bring more people into the tent.
