“I love bones. I guess that’s what I was attracted to – to working in bone and antler because I’ve always absolutely loved bones and skulls and that sort of thing. I think they’re beautiful.”
Trudy Gilbertson is the artist behind the bones at Cabin Fever Carving Nov. 23. - Alison JenkinsBRACKLEY BEACH, P.E.I. — Trudy Gilbertson uses bone and antler to create one-of-a-kind sculptures and jewelry in her Brackley Beach studio.when SaltWire Network paid Gilbertson a visit on Nov. 22.
“I had always dabbled in art and drawing and so on, and I think the three-dimension work really appealed to me,” she said. There, she experimented with antlers and began to see the possibilities of the new materials. So, when Mitch and Chad lost their antlers, something that happens each year for reindeer, their horns were in the next batch Gilbertson received.
As she described it, suddenly a dancing person appeared, arms raised in joy, a natural expression of movement. The beef bones are sturdy enough to allow the artist to finish a detailed carving and still be able to attach a fastener. She has tried carving bison, moose and deer bones as well, but beef was consistently the better material.
