Following the sentencing of Robert Rogers in Yarmouth Supreme Court on March 16, Stacey Cook – Colton Cook’s mom – said she felt that justice had been served for her son and her family.

Colton Cook's mother Stacey Cook is hugged by a family member after the sentencing of Robert Rogers, convicted of second-degree murder in Colton Cook's death. Rogers, who is nearing 60 years of age, received a life sentence and cannot apply for parole until he has served at least 19 years in prison. And applying for parole, the court noted, does not mean he will receive it. TINA COMEAU PHOTONOTE TO READERS: A warning that this story contains disturbing details.

At the conclusion of a three-week jury trial in January, Rogers was convicted of second-degree murder for the September 2020 murder of Colton Cook. Muise ruled that Rogers, who will soon turn 60 years old, will have to serve 19 years of his life sentence before being able to apply for parole consideration.

“I am very satisfied. almost 60, nineteen years, the chances of him getting out," she said."And don’t worry, I will be at his parole hearing . Trust me, he will not get out as long as I have a voice.” Another man inside the residence, Wayne Crawford, also stabbed Cook relentlessly in the chest. Crawford has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and will be sentenced in May.

Crown and defence attorneys wait outside a Yarmouth courtroom on March 16 prior to the sentencing hearing for Robert Rogers who has been convicted of second-degree murder in the September 2020 death of Colton Cook. TINA COMEAU PHOTO At sentencing, however, the Crown said Rogers does have that propensity. Cottreau referred to Rogers as a dangerous individual.

Muise said things Rogers did – such as discarding Cook’s remains in the woods, dismembering his body, and writing a letter while in jail threatening to ‘sink’ Keith Siscoe in court if Siscoe’s family didn’t give Rogers $500 – were not the actions of someone who had remorse and wanted to give Colton Cook’s family closure.

Day after day, the mother sat through the trial testimony that was horrific to listen to. Yet even when the Crown prosecutors told her there was difficult-to-hear testimony coming up, she said she had to be inside the courtroom for her son Colton.“Maybe I shouldn’t have listened to all of what happened to Colton, because now I know, and it’s not going to leave my mind any time soon,” she said.

She said she finds herself not being as loving as before. Being quick to anger. Easily irritated. Consumed with dark thoughts of revenge. And she feels guilty for wanting to experience joy, because she doesn’t want her son to think that she can move on without him.Colton Cook of Yarmouth County was murdered in September 2020.
