Andrei Svechnikov says Alex Ovechkin challenged him to the fight that knocked him out of Game 3.
Svechnikov, who spoke to reporters on Saturday, was dropped after Ovechkin hit him at least three times in the first period of what ended up being a 5-0 win for Carolina.
Svechnikov says fight with Ovechkin resulted from a “back and forth all series” and said “ I stood up for myself.”Svechnikov on Ovechkin fight: "He did ask me first for fight. I'm not a superhero ask first for fight."The 19-year-old told reporters he “hopes to play” in Game 6 on Monday. He returned to the ice wearing a cage and has practiced for the last two days, but missed Game 4 because of the injury and remains under concussion protocol.
Svechnikov added on Saturday that the fight was the result of a “back-and-forth all series” and that he was just standing up for himself. The statement contradicts Ovechkin’s, who told media that Svechnikov was the one who challenged him.. “He asked me to fight, I said, ‘Let’s go, yeah.’ So, I hope he’s OK. You don’t want to see a guy get hurt or something.
