The Humane Society of Harrisburg Area opened its doors to the community on Saturday after recently joining forces with the Brandywine Valley SPCA.

With the extra help, HSHA says it's now on a path to achieving a "No-Kill" status, which is when healthy or treatable animals are given the proper care despite any time limits or capacity issues. Euthanization would only be used as a last resort for animals that are suffering or are a danger to others.

So far, the organization has achieved an 84.5% live release rate in just the first month of working with Brandywine Valley SPCA, but the national benchmark for the No-Kill status is 90%. "There's so many things that we need to do to be able to bring this to the community, and we need the community's support. We need new volunteers, we need fosters, we need donors, we need adopters to come and embrace this and really get on board with this movement for us to be able to bring it here," said Sara Smith, the director of communications for Brandywine Valley SPCA and spokesperson for HSHA.

Smith also said the nonprofit hopes the community's support will help improve the living conditions for the animals in the facility, keep the shelter open longer and increase capacity.
