Darryl Sutter built a reputation as a harsh, exacting, in-your-face leader. At first, he looked to be the Flames' franchise savior. Then things went left. More on how Sutter’s behavior exacerbated Calgary's downward spiral and cost him his job ⤵️

Despite the changes, the Flames struggled. Part of Sutter’s earlier success was knowing when to push and when to let up. But as the losses continued, he didn’t relent, instead ratcheting up his intensity. Some players thrived under Sutter’s exacting coaching style, feeling it was the type of accountability needed to excel. Others rejected it, feeling it was an ineffective way of coaxing the most out of the team.

In January, the Flames sought to add energy to their lineup, bringing up prospects Jakob Pelletier and Walker Duehr. Duehr — a 6-foot-2, 210-pound forward — saw time almost immediately. Pelletier — a 5-foot-9, 170-pounder — needed two weeks to crack the lineup, despite being a 2019 first-round pick with excellent AHL credentials.

Over the next two months, the team failed to beat basement-dwellers Chicago, Philadelphia and Detroit. And on March 20, the Flames were routed 8-2 by the Kings, Sutter’s former team, the fourth loss in a six-game stretch. It was their biggest loss of the season and the first time a Sutter-coached team gave up four goals in the first period since 2014.and the game went into a shootout.

— a fourth-line winger who scored four goals in 16 games with Calgary — with a chance to win the game and keep the season alive. After the game, Sutter defended the shootout decision, saying: “It had no bearing on the game.”
