Shelter costs increased more than 7 per cent in Ontario since 2018, and racialized households are the least likely to own their homes.
However, racialized households were the least likely to own their homes, renter households were growing three times faster than homeowner households, and renter satisfaction was on the downswing.Average monthly shelter costs — which include rent or mortgages, utilities, property taxes and condo fees — increased 7 per cent across Canada from 2018 to 2021, according to the data.
Statistics Canada says of the 14.6 million households across Canada, just over two-thirds owned their homes, down from 69 per cent in 2018.
