HouseOfTheDragon star Milly Alcock finds the rivalry between Rhaenyra and Alicent (and audience's reactions to it) quite ironic. 'They're forced to be put at odds with one another by the choices by men...'
House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock points out the irony in the fan reactions to the contentious dynamic between Rhaenyra and Alicent. Taking place almost 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, HBO's House of the Dragon chronicles the struggles within the Targaryen family after King Viserys names his daughter, Rhaenyra , heir to the Iron Throne.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Initially introduced as very close friends, the bond between Rhaenyra and Alicent Hightower has frayed over the course of the 4 episodes that have been released thus far. A major blow to their friendship comes when Viserys takes Alicent as his new wife following Queen Aemma's death during childbirth.
“I think it was all kind of written on the page, and Emily [Carey] and I understood very quickly what this relationship meant, and that we really needed to display their unconditional love for each other when we see them. Especially in the first couple of episodes — so that when the demise of that friendship inevitably happens, the audience cares.
While not fully explored in Game of Thrones, the prequel deals extensively with the ways in which female characters like Rhaenyra and Alicent are treated by men. This theme of inherent misogyny is made abundantly plain in House of the Dragon's premiere episode when Viserys makes the decision to save his baby over his wife during childbirth, with Aemma ultimately having no say in the matter.
It remains to be seen how the dynamic between Rhaenyra and Alicent will unfold, but it's likely the rift between them will only grow, especially as Alicent gets closer to delivering her baby. Rhaenyra remains heir to the throne but the birth of Alicent's third child will only further solidify her children's claim to the throne and sow further turmoil in Westeros as more lords demand that Rheanyra be replaced with a man.
