Danny Devito's terrifying Penguin caused him to have an unfortunate encounter with a monkey on the set of Batman Returns. Tim Burton's second adventure with the Caped Crusader, Batman Returns would arrive in theaters on June 19, 1992, with Michael Keaton reprising his role as Bruce Wayne from Burton's first Batman movie in 1989. Though the make-up on DeVito would earn Batman Returns an Academy Award nomination, the make-up and DeVito's performance in the role would lead to complaints that he was too scary a villain for younger viewers.
According to DeVito, "The monkey comes down, takes one look at me, and leaps at my b---s", with DeVito also revealing that "We took off the suit and there was a huge chunk taken out of it", though DeVito himself was fortunately unharmed. The contrast in the reactions by the monkey during rehearsal and during shooting of scene indicate that DeVito fully getting into character with his Penguin look was what frightened the monkey into attacking him.
Danny DeVito's Method Acting On Batman Returns Set An Early Standard In making an effort to personify the Penguin as a truly scary villain, Danny DeVito's portrayal of Oswald Cobblepott is not that far off from the lengths numerous Joker actors have taken to playing the character. Jared Leto and Joaquin Phoenix would notably indulge in major method acting in their respective portrayals of the Joker in Suicide Squad and Joker.
With the Batman rogue's gallery being full of psychotic evildoers with bizarre appearances, DeVito's portrayal of the Penguin is something of a departure from the high society crime boss that Oswald Cobblepott typically is. Though Danny DeVito's version of the Penguin is most certainly an intense portrayal of the character, his rendition of Oswald Cobblepott is certainly an unforgettable Batman movie villain, as well.
