The league has developed educational programs for athletes, coaches, staff and fans, land acknowledgment ceremonies and charitable and social responsibility programs for the Indigenous community. In November, the Thunderbirds held a pre-season tournament with the San Diego Seals and expansion Las Vegas Desert Dogs at A’nowara’ko꞉wa Arena, a 3,000-seat multi-purpose centre on the Akwesasne reservation near Cornwall, Ont.

“The games hold a lot of merit. We only have 18 games and a lot of them are within our own conference. We really need to buckle down, especially our in-conference games because if we keep dropping those, it won’t matter if we beat the West teams, we won’t be able to catch teams in our conference because we won’t have the tiebreaker.
“We were up by a couple goals late in the game but offensively and defensively we needed to buckle down and either get a goal or two more or our defence needs to settle in and let our goalies see the shots. We just need to be more composed at the start and at the end.”
