Howard Kendall's son Simon spoke to the ECHO about his father's legacy at Everton
To the fans in the Goodison Park stands he was first part of ‘The Holy Trinity’, the most-celebrated midfield in Blues history and he then went on to become the club’s most-successful manager. To friends he was simply known as ‘H’ but to Simon Kendall he was 'Dad'.
He told the ECHO: “Whenever I’m back at Goodison it’s the first thing I look towards when I get inside the stadium. It always puts a huge smile on my face. It’s a great tribute to Dad and very fitting that the club selected the Gwladys Street End. “It’s often when the extent of someone’s contributions and connections with the people associated with the club becomes solidified. In Dad’s case he already knew what he meant to the club and the fans, and what the club meant to him.
“As a 10-year-old boy, when Trevor Steven was put through for the third and the whole crowd rose in expectation, I knew I had no chance of seeing what was about to happen so I remember sitting down with head in hands waiting for the roar! It was such a special night that will never be forgotten by anyone who was there.”
“We spent just under 24 hours in the country after travelling in from the US. It was a wonderful ceremony to share with family and catch up with old friends. While Simon’s stories highlight the tight bonds between the respective great Everton footballing families, he acknowledges that when growing up his own home-life was firmly shaped by his father’s career.
