“Even when something as simple as a TV show ends, you can feel a loss. Those feelings can be exacerbated if it’s a person.'

So if you find yourself feeling this way after the loss of someone you don’t know but feel close to, be honest with yourself about it. Frieden recommends taking “opportunities for reflection and noticing the emotions that may arise” while watching the events that unfold after the loss—for example, when a posthumous album is released following the death of your favorite musician, give yourself space to listen and feel whatever you feel.

Talking about what this person meant to you, their legacy, and all the things you loved about them with people you care about can also be a helpful way of working through your emotions.

“Over time,” Friedan says, “most people find ways to make meaning of the loss by recognizing and valuing memories that are positive and recognizing the value of a life well lived.”
