The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) warns of heavy traffic congestion on major routes as South Africans head home from holiday visits.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) anticipates heavy traffic on national and provincial roads in the coming weeks. As many holidaymakers return from visiting friends and family across South Africa, significant towns and cities are expected to see a surge in travelers. Since the beginning of December 2024, a number of fatalities have occurred on South African roads.
The RTMC predicts unprecedented traffic volumes on major routes, including the N1, N4, N2, R61, and N12, starting January 3rd. This surge in traffic is attributed to increased disposable income and holiday travel plans. Congestion is expected to be particularly heavy on January 5th, 6th, and 7th. The peak traffic hours are anticipated to be from 10 AM onwards throughout the day. In a separate incident, a car overturned near Cillier, resulting in the temporary closure of the road while the traffic site was investigated. The cause of the accident remains unknown
