The storm is currently producing snowfall over much of the Maritime provinces but will move into eastern portions of Newfoundland tonight and continue throughout the day on Saturday – finally easing into Sunday morning. NLwx

The centre of the storm is forecast to track to the south and east of the Avalon Peninsula, meaning this will be mostly, if not wholly, a snow event and what’s now set to be the first substantial snowfall of the season.

A winter storm warning is in effect for the Avalon and Bonavista peninsulas, with a snowfall warning for the Burin Peninsula. Forecast guidance is projecting more snowfall than what was predicted 24 hours ago, with the Avalon Peninsula now bracing for at least 20 to 40 cm of snow. However, it’s likely much of the eastern Avalon, including St. John’s and the metro region, will see amounts of 40 to 60-plus cm.

The snowfall will also be accompanied by intense northeast and northerly winds, which are forecast to gust 60 to 80 km/h during this event, leading to blowing snow and reduced visibility. Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning for the Avalon and Bonavista peninsulas, with a snowfall warning in effect for the Burin Peninsula.Don’t get used to it, though, as two storms set to impact the province next week are set to bring rain and mild temperatures to the Avalon Peninsula.
