The stores in Front Street, Arnold, and Central Walk, Hucknall, closed on Sunday (October 8)
A Wilko staff member who has worked at a Nottinghamshire store for more than 35 years says its closure is "heart-breaking". Irene Garvican has been working at the Arnold branch since 1987, before the move to its current location in Front Street in 1999.
Forty more, including the Wilko in Central Walk, Hucknall, saw customers for the final time on Sunday. "I've seen it all build up and now all come back down. It's so heart-breaking and there's no need for it," said Ms Garvican, who added that her branch was one of the most successful in the country."We're a good bunch here, just like a family. We could see it coming but didn't think it would, it hit us out of the blue.
One customer, 75-year-old Joe Cairney, said it had "all gone wrong" for the retailer. "I use it about once a week for things like paint. "I feel sorry for the staff." A display inside the store includes dozens of messages of support from customers, as well as 'thank you' cards.
