A community in shock rallied around Intermountain Medical Center on Sunday to support Hunter High School football player Ephraim Asiata, a 15-year-old football player who has been fighting for his life since being shot last week.

He sat at the edge of the parking lot, staring up without expression into the high rise of Intermountain Medical Center.

“He’s a kid,” Aiono said of Asiata, a 15-year-old football player who was shot on Jan. 13 and has been fighting for his life inside the hospital ever since. “That’s exactly what he is. A kid. You feel hopeless up there.” A Polaris vehicle sits with the message "Ephraim Strong" written on its windshield at the parking lot of a Smith's grocery store in Murray on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2022, to show support for Hunter High School's Ephraim Asiata, who remains hospitalized after suffering a gunshot wound nearly two weeks ago.

“He’s got a long road ahead of him,” Atiga said, noting that doctors initially gave his nephew a “1% chance” of surviving his injuries.Atiga said Asiata hasn’t been out of bed much, but has been able to start communicating with people. He added that Asiata was able to be moved to a wheelchair and received a “little tour” of the hospital.Asiata, in many ways, is the essence of the West Valley community. He was born into the community and then blossomed in his own right.

Muka Atiga gives an update on the medical condition of his nephew, Ephraim Asiata, a Hunter High School football player who was shot and critically wounded nearly two weeks ago. Atiga said Asiata is out of the ICU and "doing well." “Ephraim echoes his dad,” said Bryan Brown, who played with Matt at Snow College. “This is part of the reason why this hits so hard for so many people. We all saw what was about to happen, or potentially coming, with Ephraim.”
