Hawks Report Significant Progress in Combating High-Profile Crimes

The Hawks, South Africa's elite crime-fighting unit, has reported substantial progress in tackling high-profile criminal cases. Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya, the Hawks National Head, revealed that 1,452 suspects, including individuals and corporate entities, were arrested for various offenses ranging from corruption and organized crime to cybercrime, drug trafficking, and illegal mining. The North West province saw the highest number of arrests, followed by Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and the Western Cape. Notably, the Hawks also secured 96 freezing and forfeiture orders totaling R55 million and deposited over R2 million into the Criminal Assets Recovery Account (CARA).

The Hawks head also shared the geographical distribution of arrests, which showed the highest number of arrests were made in the North West, where 919 suspects were apprehended, followed by Gauteng with 116 arrests, KwaZulu-Natal with 106, Mpumalanga with 67, and the Western Cape with 57 suspects arrested.
