Hospitals in the Harrisburg region earned top marks from one of the nation's toughest hospital standard setting organizations, a report released Wednesday found. The Leapfrog report gave A ratings to several regional hospitals including WellSpan York, UPMC Harrisburg, Lancaster General and UPMC Carlisle.

Hospitals in the Harrisburg-Carlisle area are ranked among the highest-rated in the nation, according to a report released by The Leapfrog Group, a national independent watchdog group. UPMC Harrisburg hospital is among the hospitals that earned an A rating. “It’s a look back in time and it’s really amazing how our health system did in spite of the large number of Covid patients we had to care for. A lot of times that has impacted people’s scores.” Those earning a grade of a C include: Reading Hospital, Penn State Holy Spirit and Evangelical Community Hospital in Williamsport.

Since the start of the pandemic, patient experience has declined, Leapfrog found. Wednesday’s report represents the first sign of improvement with all measures significantly improving since fall 2023. Measures are still far from pre-pandemic levels, according to Leapfrog.“It’s most likely not a significant statistical change,” he said. “We still have exceptional hospital care here in south-central Pennsylvania. When you are looking at the top 10, it’s a marginal difference.

Overall, the national rates of hospital associated infections and complications went down largely because of the waning coronavirus pandemic. “Highmark closely monitors the hospitals in the region to make certain our members get appropriate care,” said a spokesman for Highmark Health, which has a 20 percent ownership of Penn State Health. “We also closely review Penn State Health hospitals and their service lines since many members in the region use their services. These kinds of reports can be helpful.”
