Mary Ellen Touesnard was happy to get a hot turkey sandwich dinner at Souls Harbour Rescue Mission on Saturday.There’s a big hole in the tent Mary Ellen Touesnard sleeps in every night.
Touesnard found out about Souls Harbour about a month ago and has been going there each of the six days of the week it's open. She gets only $380 a month in income assistance from the Nova Scotia government. She’s run out of money. Touesnard's among at least 100 people living outside in the Halifax and Dartmouth area, according to an Out of The Cold outreach worker who spoke to The Chronicle Herald earlier this month.
"Wouldn’t we all love to get an apartment and just sit back and relax in the bathtub," she said. "Or to be able to get up in the morning and cook yourself breakfast, or whatever.
