A previous plan to rise taxi fares by up to £1.45 a mile were deferred after disagreement between cab drivers
New plans that would see hackney journeys in Knowsley cost more could be approved by councillors tomorrow.
Last month, a request that was signed by over 100 taxi drivers was heard by the committee – although amid opposition to the increases by other black cab drivers in the borough – councillors told cabbies to go back to the drawing board and return with a new plan. While taxi drivers in favour of the proposal cited the impact of low fares on driver numbers and accessibility for disabled passengers, those against said the move would disadvantage many in a borough which has some of the highest levels of deprivation in the country, where residents are already struggling amid the cost of living crisis.
Ahead of that meeting due to be held tomorrow, a revised proposal has been put forward which could see a lower fare increase of between 50p and £1.05 depending on tariff, with plans for the introduction of an evening rate scrapped.
