Anna Jowsey always dreamed of owning a house of her own, where she could paint the walls vibrant colours and grow vegetables in the backyard.

“It’s no secret that there’s a huge need for affordable housing not only in the city, but across the province,” says Mushtaq Kazani, Habitat’s chief executive officer in Ottawa. “Owning a home is still one of the best ways to create financial well-being for families. It provides families with the stability of an adequate place to live, as well as a path to building wealth and equity for their families.

“It’s an amazing model,” says Kathy Sabourin, who has been a Habitat volunteer for more than 15 years. “It’s a way for people to have the opportunity to own a home. They aren’t getting it for free. It’s about giving them a leg up.” And with the skills she honed from working with experienced contractors on build sites, she’s built a garden shed for her home in Lanark and even grouted her bathroom tile.Article content
