President Xi told party delegates that China was still committed to reaching peak emissions and net zero at some point in the future, but for now, to maintain energy security, it would continue expanding its use of fossil fuels, especially coal. China now emits more CO2 than the rest of the developed world, combined. And that includes the United States, Canada and Western Europe.Last year alone, coal consumption by Chinese power plants increased by 10 times the amount of all the coal burnt in Canada. Just the increase was 10 times greater than our entire coal consumption.
