Three generations of Chivers firstborns have been born under Elizabeth. At any other point in history, that would be extraordinary, but at the end of the second Elizabethan reign, it’s commonplace – of the United Kingdom’s 66.4 million living inhabitants, aroundwere born during her reign. The only people who remember her coronation, now, are elderly themselves, well into their 70s, or older: usually grandparents, sometimes great-grandparents.
For some people, the death of the Queen will bring something like genuine grief. Some people will find that baffling: she wasn’t a family member; she was a distant figure, who most of us never even saw, and certainly very few of us knew in any way. “My own inkling is that famous people come to mean things to us that reflect our own lives, our own stories,” says Harpur. “Like the death of Diana – I was a child at the time and I didn’t know why it upset people so much, but now I think, my god, a young woman, with two small children. Suddenly not being there for your children, that’s a fear for most parents.”
