The arsonist started the blaze after returning home from the pub
A grandad replied 'why not?' when his daughter asked him why he had set fire to his own house. Barry Sarjant returned home from the pub and asked his wife for 'cuddles', but started a blaze inside the matrimonial home when she declined. He then armed himself with a baseball bat in a bid to prevent her from extinguishing the flames. But she disarmed him and struck him over the head with the weapon in order to escape.
The fire destroyed a hoover, a chest of drawers and several of the dad-of-two and grandfather-of-four's coats, as well as causing smoke damage to the floor, ceiling and carpet. Under interview, he denied having started the fire deliberately and claimed 'it was an accident'. He also maintained he had not assaulted Mrs Sarjant and said she had attacked him with the baseball bat. Sarjant has no previous convictions.
