South Africa has enough strategic crude oil stocks to weather a supply crisis for several weeks, but the ability to refine this oil into a usable product presents a new security of supply risk to the country. "The last directive that we had was to hold 21 days of crude," said Godfrey Moagi. CEO of government's Strategic Fuel Fund ."If we're hit by a crisis tomorrow, the current stock in tank is about 50 days. The sailing period or the lead time from West Africa, whether it be Nigeria, Angola or Ghana, is about 12 to 15 days. So we have enough stock – if you are talking about crude – to be able to replenish.
The ability to refine this crude is however a concern, Moagi told members of the parliamentary committee on mineral resources and energy on Tuesday.Get 14 days free to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism.
