A MyBroadband journalist recently installed a solar power system at his home to provide backup during load-shedding and cut down their electricity bills. Here is how the process unfolded.

We recently had a moderately-sized solar system installed at our home to have backup power during load-shedding and were impressed with how fast and seamless the whole process was.

With the portable power station not having enough juice to keep it running for a two-hour load-shedding session, frustration levels were running high when my increasingly rare gaming time clashed with Eskom’s growingly common power cuts.Having done extensive research and consulted with numerous installers for multiple articles, we knew that a 5kW system with six solar panels would be more than suitable for our requirements.

The company’s total quote for a 5kW Deye hybrid inverter, 5.12kWh Dyness lithium-ion battery, and six 550W JA Solar panels with installation and certificate of compliance came in at R71,200. A previous Mirua Technology installation posted online that helped convince us they could handle our requirements. Two teams would work on installing the system on the day, as we were told was standard practice.

The rooftop team was first to complete their job just before 11:30, with a total time of roughly two and a half hours. The second team had a more elaborate task, albeit more friendly towards those with a fear of heights.
