Two-and-half-years into the pandemic, hospitals across the country are closing or restricting access to overwhelmed emergency rooms, ICU units and delaying surgeries, primarily due to staff shortages.

As a new report by the fiscally conservative Fraser Institute released Tuesday says between 1997, the earliest year for which comparable data exists, and 2021, the cost of public health insurance Canadians pay through taxes increased by 210.3% — 1.8 times faster than the average family’s income grew during that period.Article content

Adjusted for the age of our population, we spend a higher portion of our Gross Domestic Product on health care than 27 other comparable countries that are members of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, with only Switzerland higher at 11.4% and the U.S. excluded because it does not have universal health care.Article content

Last year, the U.S. Commonwealth Fund compared Canada’s health-care system to 10 comparable, developed countries — Australia, France, Germany, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, U.K and the U.S. —
