Waite, then 20 years old, remains the youngest winner of the Gold Cup & Saucer, while his horse Dr. Walter C remains the only horse born and bred on Prince Edward Island to win.
At the time, Waite says he was considered the “underdog” with four of his competitors having earned more than $10,000 on the season.“That’s one thing is you have to have luck too; you gotta get away in the right place,” says Waite. When he and Dr. Walter C crossed that finish line first, Waite says he was met with the applause of about 10,000 spectators. In the second heat, he would finish second to pre-race favourite Gons Butler who had finished second in the first heat. Dr. Walter C was named the winner as he had won the faster heat by 1/5 of a second. He was also glad he was able to celebrate the win with all of his family , as they also helped contribute to his success as Dr.
