Pearland turns back Dawson, 50-40, to remain unbeaten in District 23-6A

Dawson’s Ziara James pulls down a rebound during Wednesday night's game against Pearland at Dawson High School.PEARLAND — With as much pressure as the Dawson girls’ basketball team was applying to Pearland on Wednesday night, it seemed the Lady Oilers’ 50-40 victory was much closer than a double-digit affair.

Pearland senior guard Janae Tucker canned a 3-pointer for a 14-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, and the Lady Oilers began the second period with an 8-1 run for a 22-9 advantage. “It’s tough when your two leading scorers don’t score in the first half,” Griffin said. “We came out hard in the second half, but it wasn’t enough.“We were overthinking too much instead of just playing. Once we started attacking the basket, we got Rylee in foul trouble, but it was too late then.”For much of the third quarter and midway through the fourth, Pearland was able to break through Dawson’s press and Perry proved to be a complementary outlet inside to relieve pressure from Grays.

Pearland sustained worrisome injuries to Thornton, who took a hard fall, and to Hardy, who suffered a leg injury, but both eventually returned.
