Gauteng records over 200 road traffic fatalities over the festive season

Preliminary statistics reveal that Gauteng has recorded over 200 road fatalities since the beginning of the festive season, with pedestrians accounting for almost 50% of the casualties.

This is according to the Gauteng Traffic Police, which has since announced that it had intensified the deployment of officers along major routes to ensure the safety of road users. The traffic department said in a statement on Sunday this was part of an integrated festive season law enforcement plan, which would see officers embarking on a series of heightened law enforcement activities carried out across the province at identified freeways and hotspots.

Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Sello Maremane said it was concerning that pedestrians continued to account for the high number of road fatalities. This pedestrian high mortality rate is attributed to not wearing reflective gear at night, violation of traffic signals and distracted walking while under the influence of alcohol and jaywalking, among others.

He said the province had in recent times experienced serious forms of dangerous driving, such as reckless and negligent driving. “Three children lost their lives on Saturday in Salvokop, Pretoria, following reckless and negligent behaviour by a BMW driver who was allegedly spinning the car. In another incident, a pedestrian was hit by a VW polo on the R101 near Hammanskraal.”He added traffic police would also deploy road safety practitioners in built-up areas along the freeways and other roads identified as dangerous to enhance road user knowledge and to increase pedestrian compliance with road traffic rules and signs.
