Judge Ismail Mahomed decries the lack of ventilation in the courtroom, insisting that should this not be remedied, those attending court proceedings on the private prosecution case brought by former president Jacob Zuma against the incumbent head of state, Cyril Ramaphosa, could get sick.
Judge Ismail Mahomed of the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg has instructed court officials to follow Covid-19 social distancing rules in upcoming appearances in his courtroom.
Mahomed decried the lack of ventilation in the courtroom, insisting that should this not be remedied, those attending court proceedings on the private prosecution case brought by former president Jacob Zuma against the incumbent head of state, Cyril Ramaphosa, could get sick. The judge said: As you would note, there’s no ventilation in this place. There’s no air conditioning, there are no windows you can open and Covid-19 is still rife.
Mahomed rebuked those responsible for keeping the courts safe and pressured them to follow the rules of the court as far as keeping the public safe goes. "I say this specifically to the court orderlies because they are in charge of this court, and they must see to it that the Covid-19 protocols are observed."The last thing we want is for people who attend this court - I don’t care who it might be - to get sick.Last week, City Press reported that Gauteng High Court Deputy Judge President Roland Sutherland said the doors of the high court would be closed indefinitely due to the uncertainty over the power supply from Eskom.
