The Gauteng government has concluded its investigation into the irregular spending of nearly R600 million on refurbishing a private hospital for COVID-19 use. Despite the upgrade, the mining company later revoked the lease, prompting an Auditor General finding of material irregularity. Five officials have been dismissed, two received warnings, one acquitted, and one is no longer employed. Some face fraud and corruption charges.

JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng government has completed its investigation into the nearly R600 million irregularly spent on refurbishing a private hospital.

At the time, the department said the 181-bed facility was donated to the government as a COVID-19 healthcare facility.
