After eight years in Calgary ,Johnny Gaudreau wants to do something special to thank the city.

The Columbus Blue Jackets’ prized free-agent acquisition caused quite a stink in his old stomping grounds with Thursday’s comment — made during his introductory press conference in Ohio — that he opted to sign elsewhere because “it was best for us not to go back to Calgary.”

“They kind of just caught me off-guard with that question and I just wanted to focus on Columbus. If I hurt anyone’s feelings, I didn’t mean it by that. I have my own idea of what I was going to do to thank Calgary and everyone for how special it was to me. And hopefully when they do see it, they realize I had the best intentions and I hope I didn’t upset anyone.”

The 28-year-old Gaudreau, soon expecting the arrival of his first child, reiterated Friday that it “was time for a change for me and my wife” and that he wanted to skate in the Eastern Conference so they’d both be closer to their loved ones. He hails from Carneys Point, N.J. “Calgary was so great to me and I have such good memories, not just from people around the rink but from around the entire city — restaurant owners, the place I get my hair cut, the guy who makes my suits, just everyone.”Article content
