After eight years in Calgary ,Johnny Gaudreau wants to do something special to thank the city.
“To be honest, yesterday, I didn’t want to talk about Calgary. I wanted to focus on Columbus because I am going to do something for Calgary,” Gaudreau told Micallef on Friday’s episode of Tim & Friends. “I have my own little thing happening here to just thank Calgary for everything.Article content
The fan-favourite forward was offered an eight-year, US$84 million contract to stick around Calgary, where he would have had a shot at erasing the franchise scoring record. He instead opted for unrestricted free agency and ultimately inked a seven-year deal with the Blue Jackets that will pay a total sum of US$68.25 million.Article content
“It was emotional. It was difficult. I sat there with my mom and my wife and it was pretty sad, I’m not going to lie,” he said. “I was just a 20-year-old kid, playing my first season in the NHL in Calgary. And leaving there now, I’m married and I have a kid on the way. It kind of just molded me into who I am today.
